奨学金とローン
大学進学は、多くの家庭にとって、住宅の次に大きな出費です。大学進学には、授業料の他に書籍等の教材費や、食費や寮費等の滞在費もかかります。少しでも出費を抑えるためには、ファイナンシャルエイドを最大限に活用することが大切です。
ファイナンシャルエイドには、返済の不要な奨学金と、返済が必要なローンの２種類があります。日本では、返済の義務があるエイドにも奨学金という名前をつけている場合が多いですが、アメリカでスカラシップと名のついているものは、全て返済が不要なファイナンシャルエイドです。
大学からのファイナンシャルエイド
ファイナンシャルエイドの出所には、大きく分けて２つの種類があります。ひとつは、大学から（厳密には、大学を通して）提供されるもの、そしてもうひとつが民間の団体から提供されるものです。ここでは、大学から提供されるファイナンシャルエイドに特化してご説明します。大学から提供されるファイナンシャルエイドが金額的に圧倒的に大きいため、いかに多くのファイナンシャルエイドを大学から受けるかが、その後の資金繰りに大きな影響を及ぼすからです。
大学から提供されるファイナンシャルエイドは、いくつか種類がありますので、それをまずご説明します。まず第一に、ニーズベースのグラントがあります。これは、経済的なニーズに基づいて提供されるファイナンシャルエイドのことです。二つ目が、メリットベースのスカラシップです。これは、主に高成績の評価により提供されるものです。成績以外に、リーダーシップやコミュニティ活動等への評価が含まれる場合もあります。三つ目が、タレントベースのスカラシップです。これは、ミュージックやアート、スポーツ等に秀でた学生が対象となる奨学金です。
ファイナンシャルエイドの額は、大学の予算や家族の年収、家族構成等に大きく影響されますが、私立の大学は、州立大学に比べてかなり多くのファイナンシャルエイドを学生に提供しています。州内学生としてUCに進学するのよりも安いコストで質の高い私立大学に通っている学生も数多くいます。
